First Sour Patch Kid

I sound so dumb...

"Good Job, James!"

Like he just solved world hunger instead of trick or treating.

Happy Halloween!

From Fireman James & his faithful Dalmation Puppy Ruby

You can see more pictures from our morning party here. It was a little chaotic but a lot of fun. The kids all looked adorable and loved getting all the little goodies. My firefighter and puppy are both napping so I'm off to read for a while. I posted pictures from our fun weekend in Eau Claire, also. I will write more about that later. Adios!  Posted by Picasa

For some reason my links and archives that used to be over on the right are now all the way down at the bottom. Look down there if you need the picture link. Someday I'll try to figure it out, but not today. :)

soooo good!

Well, the bread was a success. I made 6 mini loafs using the Martha Stewart pan my sister got me and they baked up in under a half hour (much nicer than the 60 minutes for one full size loaf). I would suggest sprinkling them with sugar before baking. They have a rather robust taste and the small bit of kosher salt makes them really different than any pumpkin quick bread I've tasted. These loaves could go either way...I can picture them along side a good Octoberfest beer OR a cup of coffee. See recipe link in the "good things" post a couple down.

ETA: It tastes like gingersnaps! When I had a bite this morning, it hit me. Very yummy.

Genuine Martha Good Thing

In my alternate life, the one where I have no small children,
I want to make these:

You can find full instructions here.

a few good things

1. Vintage dishes I got for James (and someday Ruby) on Ebay. Of course, after I bought them my mom tells me she has a truckload of toy dishes but, oh well! These are pretty cute.

2. Ruby & James are sleeping.

3. My meatballs are done...we are having meatball subs with Newman's Own Cabernet Marinara Sauce for dinner tonight. Yum!

4. My mini loaves of Real Simple's new Pumpkin Bread recipe are in the oven. I'll post more about them when the results are in.

5. Speaking of childhood toys. Anyone remember these?

(too bad noone saved them for me)

6. Did I mention Ruby & James are sleeping?

gotta go hurry up & relax...

I try

S: Would you like some avocado, buddy?
J: No sanks
- pause -
J: May I please have some mishmallows?

I love how he uses a higher tone at the end of his request to make it sound "fun". I wonder where he learned that?

American Pie

Excuse my singing. James LOVES this song, just from me singing part of it one day. He sings it, too, but of course I missed it.

Thank you, Lord.

I woke up this morning with 2 sick kids. I was physically craving fresh air but the frost on the grass told me I shouldn't take them outside. Okay, the thrift store it is! The last 10 minutes before we leave the house are normally among the worst of the day. I am trying to remember 15 things, James won't put his shoes on, Ruby is screaming and I am normally starving. So. There's all that. I feel pretty manic as I pull out of the garage but about 5 minutes later my blood pressure starts to drop. It's gorgeous out today! I'm drinking coffee that isn't bitter even though I made it 2.5 hours ago! Ruby fell asleep! So many small blessings equal one huge relief for me. We ended up going for about an hour long walk along Lake Monona. James whined at first but then he enjoyed himself. Ruby started screaming just as we turned back and James, in his infinite wisdom, says, "Wuby wants to be carried." And she did. He knows her so well already. :) You can see a few more pics here, and a video soon. Oh yeah, my jacket rocks!

Backyardigan and again and again

S: What do you want for lunch?
J: Watch Backyardigan movie.
S: What do you want to eat for lunch?
J: Surfer Wuby.
S: What food do you want to eat for lunch?
J: Sandtassle.

Do you think he's watched Surf's Up a few too many times today?

All the makeup came out! Here is my new coat & scarf that I got for $2.25 + $15.00 dry cleaning. I like it. Now I just need to go out on a date with my husband.

Cupcakes! Cupcakes!

I am so excited for this cookbook to come out - Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World. It is actually out already and should be in my hot little hands soon as I am the first one on the library hold list. (geek!) Maybe James will get something other than chocolate for his birthday. It will be so fun to post lovely cupcake pictures like this:

Oh, and by the way. It happened again. My innocent search for cupcake images turned up this:

Do NOT let James or Ruby or Patrick (!) ever search for harmless food images online.
(although, I must admit, I do like her more than that pumpkin slut)

Get ready to puke, Mom

They're back...

And I've got them!

(that's EGGNOG and
if you don't have your glasses on)

It doesn't add up

James slept exactly one hour and ten minutes. Ruby slept for 35 of those minutes and then James woke her up. She is one crabby little girl and has been yelling her pretty red head off in her crib for the past 5 minutes. James has been circling me, rubbing up against my back for the last 5 minutes as I type this. I have 2 hours and 15 minutes until Patrick gets home & I can go to the Library and pick up my other new (used) coat at the dry cleaners. 27 - the number of times James sneezed today. 3- the number in feet of how far he sprays with each sneeze. Can I make it? Only 3 hours and 15 minutes until James goes to bed. *sigh of relief* Ruby has fallen asleep.

Did I tell you I got a new coat? I found it at Dig & Save a few weeks ago and it cost a whole $2! And it's from the Gap! It's a grey wool dressier coat. It had makeup rubbed all over the collar and I am so excited to see if they got it out. I will post a picture of it tomorrow. I haven't had a new dress coat in about 8-10 years. (not that I really need one) And on Sunday I found a beautiful pale pink scarf with a grey stripe on the end. This could be really, really good. I'll let you know.

This is horrible but also a little brown blessing. James pooped (#3 for the day!) about 7 minutes ago and has been hiding out from me. That is why I got to finish my post. Because my son crapped his pants and doesn't want to get changed. Life is good. xo

UPDATE: He hadn't pooped! He actually left me alone for more than 30 seconds. Will wonders ever cease?

I guess we all have our needs

James woke up with a cold this morning and I knew I needed to get us all out of the house if we were to survive until naptime. He wasn't too keen on the Target idea but with a little persuasion he put his pants back on and got in the mini. Once there, this is how it played out:

J: I don't wanna go to Target.
S: Okay, Ruby & I will go in and you can wait in the mini. We will miss you, though.
J: Otay. My will come in. (He interchanges "I" and "My" now)
S: Okay, I will go get a cart
J: NOOOOOOO. My don't wanna ride in a tart.
S: You have to ride in a cart through the parking lot. You may get out of the cart in the store WHEN I SAY.
J: whimpering to himself while I fetch cart.

Here is where it gets good. I walk to grab a cart and momentarily entertain the thought of a trip to Target all! by! my! self! But, I return to the mini like a good mother and get James out of his carseat. I am about to give him a snuggle because he doesn't feel good, poor kid. He slaps me! Right in the Target parking lot! I put him in his carseat for a time out. While I'm getting Ruby out I tell him he needs to apologize.

J: No.
S: That was very naughty. Why did you hit mama?
J: I just needed to.

AHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA! It was so hard not to crack up. I put him in the cart, gave him a snack and we actually had a very nice trip. He was in a much better mood after he ate and I let him walk all over the store. He loves the walking privilege and hates to have it revoked so it works out well. Ruby was cracking up just watching him wander in front of us and explore. And, there is a Lands' End inlet right by our Target so I got my new jacket afterwards!! Yay! I love it.

I am so happy it's Friday! I love the weekends for a lot of reasons, mainly because we get some time all together and I get some time all alone. This weekend may be a busy one. This is what I'm thinking so far:

1. Take James to Jasper's party on Saturday morning - I'm looking forward to having some time alone with him - not at the party but after. Maybe I'll take him to lunch or something. (or the thrift store if he's really lucky)
2. We might all go to the Enchanted Forest Saturday night, if it's nice out
3. RETURN OUR DEAD TREE (this has been bothering me for AGES)
4. Do some auctions
5. Make a meal plan for the next month
6. Get groceries
eta:7. DUH! I have to check out the new Trader Joes! Yay!!!

What a boring post. But I am documenting my life! See that, Patrick!?

First words after nap yesterday:

"My wish my had a piano in my room, mama."

Oh yes, me too, James.

James says...

"Pillows are a great source of comfort while mama is blogging."
 Posted by Picasa

It all started so innocently.

All I did was search for a pumpkin image.

I feel so dirty.
Did you know there was a pumpkin fairy?

Pumpkin Angel Food Cake

1 cup canned pumpkin
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/8 teaspoon ground ginger
1 angel food cake mix

Combine pumpkin, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and ginger in a large bowl. Prepare cake mix according to package directions. Fold 1/4 of the batter into pumpkin mixture. Fold in remaining batter. Spoon into an ungreased 10-in tube pan. Cut through batter with a knife to remove air bubbles. Bake on the lowest oven rack at 350 for 38-44 minutes or until top is golden brown. Invert pan onto wire rack, cool completely. Remove from pan, garnish, and enjoy!

I saw one of these at Whole Foods and searched for a recipe. This sounds very yummy. If I lived by my family I would invite them over and make it for them. sigh.

This is a test...

Dad, are you out there? Did you know you can comment right below? Where it says, "COMMENTS." Annie & Mom comment - don't you want to? Love, skg

Oh yeah, here's the website plug I promised:

Check out my Dad's AWESOME FORD Thunderbird site! Yes, it's just a website, not a BLOG, but it's still pretty cool. He is restoring some old man car called an Italian. (haha, I know, I know...ITALIEN)

Seriously, he's the best & you should check it out.

(Now Mom & Annie will check it out because they are my only readers.)
(but I'm okay with that)

My sister's worst nightmare...

A big, fat apple cinnamon pancake man. James, however, loved it. You can see herePosted by Picasa

Speedy Apple Pie

Speedy Apple Pie
1 premade deep dish pie crust
3-5 apples, peeled & chopped in pieces
3/4 stick butter, softened
1 cup Bisquick
1/4 c. sugar
1/2 t. cinnamon
Preheat oven to 350. Place chopped apples in pie crust. In a large bowl, cut together the butter, Bisquick, sugar, and cinnamon until crumbly and well combined. Place on top of apples in crust, covering as much of the apples as possible. Bake 1 hour or until top is nicely browned. This recipe is also easily doubled if you want to make 2 pies, since there are usually two pie shells in a package. I also sprinkled sugar on top of the crust before I baked it. Doesn't it look good?
I found & copied this recipe from here.Posted by Picasa

Couldn't you just die?

If only he always gave up this easily...

S: I will put them on your feet.
J: My will take them right off.
S: I will glue them and then tape them.
J: My will say, "Uh! My can't get them off."

My Future Jacket

Here is the jacket I am getting, but I will choose black.

Firestation Open House (aka Heaven)

We went to the open house at the Fitchburg Fire Hall yesterday and it was so much fun! James had a blast looking at all the different trucks and wearing his hat. You can see more pictures herePosted by Picasa

Decisions, Decisions

Which should I get for Ruby? I think probably the 2nd ones, the Isabooties, because they're adorable AND sound like they're very well made. But these Rocketgirl ones from Jaminga are sooooo darling...
