the little things

Good morning.  How the heck are you?  I am pretty good. Patrick is still working a lot so that has been stressful.  I hope things go back to normal soon.

The big kids have early release today and we are going to visit a pet store or two after they get home.  (eek!  just looking today, though!)  James and Ruby are walking home, together, by themselves.  Oh boy.  James has walked with friends before but not with Ruby.  I am trusting them to be nice to each other and for him not to ditch her.  I will let you know how it goes.  :)  Nick and I are planning on walking in that general direction later so we might, you know, accidentally meet up with them.  :)

Yesterday Nick and I got groceries, went to Home Depot and then over to Olbrich Gardens for some warmth.  This is not my photo:

I wish that place was 4x as big as it is.  It felt so good to be warm and surrounded by lush greenery.  Nicky had a good time going every which way on the paths and it took him about 45 minutes before he realized he was seeing the same stuff for the 4th time.  :)  He has been watching a lot of Wild Kratts lately and is kind of obsessed with Peregrine Falcons so he kept his eyes open for one.  ;)  After that we went for lunch (McDonald's fish fillets, his choice) and then he fell asleep on the way home.  I carried him in, laid him down, and had an hour and a half all to myself.  What a treat!  He never naps on his own at home anymore but will almost always fall asleep in the car.  I should make a point of taking him someplace every day so that happens...it helps so much to have a little quiet.

I am so excited I get to work the next 2 days!  Yay!  :)  I won't have any work days next week (spring break) but hope to get a few listings done every day.  I want to take lots of pictures the next couple days so I am ready.  I ordered some pink & blue poly mailers and I love them!!

How fun to get a pink or blue package, right?  It's the little things.

I was working on making the L sound with Nick last night.  It was pretty cute and he made the connection that the way he says it sounds different.  He said he says it wrong and I said not wrong, just different.  I was happy he was trying and could totally make the sound...he just needed to be shown how.  (and shown again by a pro...I was just messing around.)  Little buddy.

Alright, I gots to go.  Hungry!!

lofty love

Good morning!  It's Monday!  Time to clean dirty houses, wash piles of laundry and stock empty cupboards all while listening to a nearly 4 year old tell you his every thought, plan and desire in between begging for more time on the iPad!  (if you're me, that is.)  :)

How are you?  I am good.  Everything I mentioned above is true.  Our house is trashed and we are low on foodstuffs and Nick is already showing signs of extreme chattiness today.  It's going to be a busy day but hopefully a good one.  It's cold (sigh) but sunny so there is that.  When we can finally have the windows open on a daily basis, that will be such a GOOD day.

How was your weekend?  Mine was good.  Saturday was a lot of fun and it was nice to be reminded that ikea/Chicago is not that far away.  I wasn't planning on any major purchases but I got Nick a new mattress and Ruby a loft bed.  Yay!

Ruby wants a pet more than anything but I am allergic to cats and dogs, her top two picks.  We were considering a rat or mice but two friends filled me in on their life with guinea pigs a couple of weeks ago and they've been on our radar ever since.  We knew Ruby would want them in her room and there just. wasn't. room.  Patrick said he would build her a loft bed but when I saw one on Saturday for a good price, I snatched it up.  (well, slowly, with my sister's help...it was heavy!)  We spent the morning yesterday cleaning rooms and moving beds (Nick has her twin now) and Patrick put the new one together.

I took this early this morning so it's super grainy but you get the idea.  She loves it and I do, too.  I kind of want to loft everything in our house.  :)  Do they make king size lofts?  We could crawl up there at night, pull up the ladder and they couldn't get to us!!  :)  hahahhaa.

Anyways, it was a fun day that resulted in a super messy house.  We barely made it to afternoon church and then had dinner at Old Chicago.  James was bummed because his burger was icky.  I tasted it and the kid was right...no flavor at all.  I like that he has a somewhat discerning palette.  It's very different than Ruby, who is just "picky."   (bless her heart.)

I also have some ebay sales to package up so I should get to it.  I hope you have a happy Monday!

happy weekend!

Good morning, dear ones.  How's it going?  I can't believe it's Friday already.  Where did the week go???

I was up one pound on my weigh in today.  gah!  :)  I am actually okay with it because I am still down from my dreaded plateau number.  For a whole week!  That is a record.  :)  Fluctuations are normal so I'm not sweating this.  (also, ovulating.)  (sorry, dad.)

In other weight related news, Ruby found the "before" pictures on my tablet.  Talk about humiliation!!  Oh, how she laughed!  The fully clothed ones aren't too bad but one where I show my stomach in too tight shorts...awful!!!  I think this is payback for all the times I pretended to vomit when I would see my mom in her underwear.  :)

Tomorrow is our big shopping adventure and I can't wait!  A day to answer to know one but myself and my debit card.  :)  I am picking my mom and sister up at 6am and we are heading out onto the open road.  Sigh.  Sounds perfect.

One thing I hope we come across is a Teavana.  We have one at the mall here now but the day I was in there felt too high pressure and I got kind of irritated.  The tea they had me taste was delicious, though, and I haven't been able to get Marshmallow Macaron out of my head.  I need to find some of that and SOON.

When we painted our kitchen we ordered a new cabinet for a spot we had previously had shelves.  Now we keep cereal in the top part and the bottom shelf is for coffee and tea.  I love it!  It is my happy cabinet.

The ones in front are all my current faves.  Sleepytime is, too, but we just ran out.  I would also like to place an order with David's Tea.  Soooooon.  Hey!  I just saw they have some stores in Chicago!  Hmmmmmmm.

I know this post is a snooze.  I'm sorry.  I hope you have a fantastic weekend with amazing weather!  :)  (we can dream, right??)

fine motor skills, ftw

Nicky had his 4K evaluation last week and they said they had mild concerns with his speech & fine motor skills. Speech, I kind of figured. (he yoves me a yot) Fine motor skills didn't really surprise me, either. He does play with little things a lot (yot) like (yike) legos (yeg...okay, I'll stop.) but he NEVER wants to do anything involving holding a crayon, marker, or paintbrush.  They didn't tell me to do anything, just that they'd be looking at this again next fall.  But of course I'm going to try and help him now!!  :)  Not so much with speech (not a specialist) but a little fine motor skills wouldn't kill me.

On Monday he said he didn't want to color or paint but he would if he could squeeze glue while he did it.  the hell?  But, SURE KID.  Go for it.

As this was one of his first art sessions, I had to take a lot of pictures.  (also, it might be his last.)  (also, out of glue.)
After art he was happy to practice some more by squeezing melted chocolate.
We made some coconut macaroons using this recipe (only with just 3 egg whites) and they were easy and very good.  We turned half into thumbprints with my chia seed jam.  YUM.
I unconsciously chose the cookies I drizzled for this last photo.  I wonder what that says about me??
The elliptical was still in the garage yesterday when J&R got home.  Naturally, they had to try it.  It's downstairs now and James just finished using it.  He burned 19 calories.  :)

I worked today and I am pooped.  Patrick has been working lots of extra hours just lately and probably won't be home until late again tonight.  :(  The system he is working on ships to India tomorrow and I am SO glad.  Things will go back to normal for a while and that will be so nice.

On Saturday my mom, sister and I are going to Chicago for a shopping day.

CAN'T WAIT.

oh my goodness, I have a lot to say

I am not sure I will get through it all before Nick wakes up!  You poor, poor things.  :)

Happy Monday!  ha.  Actually, I am happy it's Monday but Monday mornings can be a drag.  A lot of mornings can be a drag here lately.  My kids have been grumpy and complaining and just generally frustrating in the morning these days.  I am trying to give them a bit of grace because I am feeling the same way.  :/

I wasn't here much last week because the times when I could have sat down to blog, I was grumpy.  I hate complaining too much and like to do it best when I've thought it through...not just come and unload a big whine fest.  (you're welcome.)  :)  It's basically that I am so over cold weather.  I tear up a little thinking about it.  It's been a long winter, not a bad one, but a long one.  I am so ready for warm days and being outdoors without a hat & mittens.  Thankfully, sigh, we are getting a couple days like that a week now but it's not really enough.  (whiner alert!)  I am trying all of my tricks to get through this with a good spirit...still getting outside, exercising, planning fun things, planning summer fun things.

That being said, it hasn't been all grump all the time.  I had a good week in a lot of ways.  I found an elliptical machine for $40 and it works!  I used it on Saturday and burned 300 calories in 30 minutes.  It is hard but I am really happy to have another option.  I also looked into joining the local gym and we want to go look at it.  They will suspend our membership for the summer months if we join now (because we probably wouldn't use it much then) but we might just wait until fall to join.  Honestly, finding the elliptical took some of the urge away...I was just really wanting something different and that thing helps for now.  (soon I will be jogging or riding my bike out there...sooooooon....)

side note:  I have also had a mild but annoying cold for the last week.  It just adds to the pity party atmosphere.  ;)   I just thought to add that because I had to jump up for a kleenex.  My nose is that way where all of a sudden it just DRIPS.  tragic.

Another really good thing.  This is REALLY good!  I was 1.8 lbs. down on Friday!!!  Yay!!!  I am the farther away from my plateau number than I have been before.  Not by much but I will take it!  I really wanted to weigh myself this morning but I held back and tried on some shorts instead.  :)  (those SAME yellow shorts I wanted to get into last summer.  maybe this year is it??  I don't even like them anymore.  flipping things.  ha!)  (also, the gray pants in that post are so close to fitting, the pinstriped skirt totally fits now and I got rid of the other pants because the cut just wasn't going to EVER work for me.  so, hey, that is kind of good news!  but those DANG yellow shorts!!!)  So, anyways, that was awesome and I am hoping for and working towards another loss this week.  (after that I am not weighing for TWO weeks because there is really no point during that time of my month.  my sister convinced me of this.  she's right.)

okay, (almost) enough going on and on.  I have to apologize now because if we are on instagram together, then you have seen these.  Sorry!  Still slacking on the camera use unless it's for ebay.

I took Ruby and Nick to the circus a while ago and it was kind of a nightmare with a few highlights.  One of them was Nick watching the stunt motorcycles.  :)  Also, he sat down by Wendy and her girls the whole time.  They are all so sweet to him and he really loves hanging out with them.

This is one of my favorite things Patrick and I do on the weekends.  Sit on our love seat with coffee and magazines.  :)  I just love it and look forward to it every week.
Last week I made these granola bars from the Minimalist Baker.  They were really good even though I totally didn't read the directions first.  So know that they are forgiving.  :)  My kids chowed on them and I loved them, too.  (I cut them small so each bar was 100 calories.)
I also made some mixed berry chia seed jam.    It didn't get super thick and it is pretty seedy but the seeds are soft so it's okay.  I didn't think my kids would touch it but they have all eaten it without comment.  I am putting it on my overnight oats every morning instead of honey now.  It's really good.  (although not as good as the raspberry jam I made last summer.  Yuuuuuuum, that was good!  can't wait for summer!  have I said that??)
I got home from my friend's house Saturday night to this scene:

So sweet.  They are good kids.  As I live and breathe, we WILL get through March.

;)

the latest

So unless you've seen the Lego movie, you will just think that I was yelling Everything is Awesome!  :)  It is actually the theme song from the movie and it has been in my head ever since.  My kids hate when I sing it.  Which makes me feel old because I remember hating when my mom sung stuff.  So actually everything is not awesome and I am just old.

blink blink

:)  Just kidding.

This morning was rough.  I hope it's just the Daylight Saving time adjustment period and my kids are not really monsters.  At least I didn't yell at them today.

Yesterday was an amazing day, weather-wise.  Our first 50 degree day in months and it felt soooooo good.  I washed our bedding and hung it on the line!  Nicky and I took a long walk without heavy jackets!  I had windows open!!  Loved it.  Today is like winter again but I know these days are numbered.

One goal I forgot to mention is the 5 fruits and veggies goal.  This is one of my favorites and I am continuing to try and reach this each day.  Yesterday I sauteed spinach & tomatoes to eat with my scrambled eggs.  I had potatoes and green beans with dinner and a banana and oranges in the morning.  It takes a little planning but not as much as I thought.  Also, there are always carrot sticks.  :)  (also, pooping like a BOSS.)

I took some pictures of myself yesterday.  You know, "before" pictures.  :)  I hope to see subtle changes that the scale might not pick up.  I haven't weighed myself since last Friday.  The first couple of days were hard but it's getting easier and I will weigh in this Friday.  I also admitted that I was feeling sorry for myself and haven't been working out particularly hard.  It's hard to read/see so many people losing weight by just changing their eating habits and not experience that myself.  It's probably because I'm old.  (see above.)  HOWEVER, I tell myself, I do love how exercise makes me feel and know it's good for me so I need to get over that.  Also, whatever I have done has worked to the tune of 26 pounds and that is nothing to sneeze at.  I just want to lose FOUR MORE POUNDS, though.  And then go from there.  But right now, just FOUR.  please.  :)  I also googled plateaus and read quite a few accounts of women being right at the weight I am at and having a hard time getting past it.  Whatever that means, it made me feel less alone and crazy.

Nick is watching Sesame Street and we are leaving to do errands soon.  I need to get hangers as the kids resale is right around the corner.  Lots of work to do for that!!

Before I go, have you tried overnight oats?  They are my new favorite food and this is how I make them.  1/3 C. rolled oats, 1/3 C. unsweetened vanilla almond milk (any milk is fine), 1/3 C. plain greek yogurt, 1 T Chia seeds, pinch of salt, bit of vanilla, some cinnamon, a little honey.  Put it all in a jar, put the lid on and shake it up.  These are soft and thickened in about two hours, they don't need to sit all night.  I like to add a T. of sunbutter and some fruit when I eat them.  You can heat them to take the chill off or eat them cold.  They are super good!!!!  YUMMMMMY.

peace out.

everything is awesome. it is.

My gosh.  I am sorry I left that crabby post up for over a week.  :)  I had PMS SO BAD last week.  It lasted a couple of days and I was cranky about everything.  Thankfully it passed and I'm back to normal.  whew.

Sadly, I can't get past my weight road block.  I think I might stop weighing myself every day (I weigh once, in the morning) and try once a week.  My friend also suggested that I try a totally different exercise routine so I am thinking about that.  I will not lie, I am discouraged right now and a little sad, too.  I would appreciate any tips or experience you've had with a big plateau. :(

I don't have a goal chart for March and missed some days in February.  I am still doing almost everything almost every day, though.  I found I love taking the time to wash & moisturize my face.  Also, can't go more than a day without flossing now.  Drinking water is easy to mess up on if I don't pay attention.  I am on an Ebay roll so listing 2 a day has been good for me.  I am trying to do 4 most days now.  I read a devotional every morning.  My day just doesn't feel right if I don't.  What else?  Oh yeah.  Exercise.  Right now I am pissed at exercise but I am still doing it most days.  I am also tracking my food almost every day.  I did lose 4.5 more pounds last month so my total lost since Jan.2 is 7.  Just what I had gained.  Not a bit more.  (what the HELLLLLLLLL?)

The good thing about that loss in February is that I was eating more calories and still lost weight.  One thing I hear about for getting past a plateau is to UP your calories for a few days and then go back down.  I kind of naturally did that last week but it didn't work.  I didn't go overboard, though, so maybe I should.  :)  Sounds kind of nice.  I've got nothing to lose.  Obviously.  ha.

I want to write more about my kids soon and post more pictures of them.  I miss doing that.

So, thanks for checking in on me.  :)  I hope all is well with you, faithful reader.

(was it Stephen King that said that?)

Oh, speaking of books.  The Girl You Left Behind is REALLY, REALLY good.  Loved it.

Also, The Lego Movie was so fun and we also saw Monuments Men.  Loved that, too.

EVERYTHING IS AWESOME!
